Welcome back to the long awaited second installment of our wedding dress guide. The biggest piece of advice that I can give you would be this… when you walk through the doors of a wedding dress boutique, please, please, please, make your budget loud and clear! Do not let the sales people, consultants, specialists etc… try to make you spend more than you can afford or are willing to afford. They will push and push and bring in dresses that are more than your verbal budget, so please ask the price before you step into each dress. This way you will not have to face the dreaded decision to walk away from your dream dress that you couldn’t afford from the beginning. This will hang over your head no matter how many places you shop or dresses you put on. No dress will ever match up to that $5,000 dream dress you tried on. Okay, so since I got my #1 most important advice out there, up next is what to bring to your appointment.

What to bring and wear to your bridal appointment:

Some items to bring with you during your dress search would have to be some of these amazing undergarments. While some bridal shops do supply these, you might feel a little more comfortable bringing your own knowing that you are the only person to have used it!

A bouster type or strapless bra

Slip
To help keep your comfort level, bring a slip, because let’s face it — having someone watch you get undressed isn’t the most comfortable thing to experience.

Spanx
Spanx help smooth out bumps and bulges. (Spanx Higher power will not shrink you by size just smooth you out!)

Pictures

Bring along pictures of the dresses you were thinking about trying on to see if the store has that particular dress or something like it in stock. Keep in mind that stores will tell you they have a dress when they in fact DO NOT have that dress so double check with them before you drive all around town for no reason (this happened to me numerous times) So please check or you will most likely unleash this creature — The infamous Bridezilla!

Wearing comfortable clothing, such a dress and flip flops, will make your experience move more quickly if you need to step out of the room to look at more dresses; if there are no robes available for you to use. Flip flops also make it easier to walk around without having to tie laces ect. However if you are going for your fitting you should bring along the shoes and undergarments you plan on wearing for your wedding day to make sure your seamstress has accurate measurements.

Gown colors

Keep in mind those with olive skin tones will look better in ivory rather than white and those with pink or yellow undertones will look better in white! Bridal designers are now making dresses in all sorts of colors ranging from pastel pink, green, blue, yellow to silver, gold, and even red (which is very popular in other cultures and is just catching on here in the U.S.!) As a matter of fact one of my favorite people in the whole world Gwen Steffani wore an amazing colored dress!

Just remember the formality of your dress and location need to play a big factor if you do chose to go with a fabulous colored dress. Here are a few fabulous dresses in different price points.

So to recap and add a few tips:

1.) Call and make an appointment in advance
2.) Make your budget loud and clear
3.) Bring items to up your comfort level
4.) Wear a cute dress for ease in case you need to venture out onto the salon floor.
5.) Bring the shoes and under garments you want to wear.
6.) Bring pictures of the dress you like.
7.) Bring only 2 people!!!!! My biggest suggestion by far! (Notice all the exclamation points I used… that is how you know I’m serious! You will thank me later!)
8.) Bring a Camera (even if you have to sneak a few pictures with a camera phone it’s worth it … but I didn’t tell you to do this… Some shops prohibit photography.)
9.) The choice is up to you always remember that!
10.) Enjoy this time, it goes by quick!

Stayed tuned for more Bridal Inspiration!

Whether it’s for a wedding, prom, or just every day wear, I have been in search of a perfect long wear lip color. Over the next few days I will be trying and reviewing some of the top brands of long wear lip color. I will be rating all of the lip colors on a scale of 1-5. Each will have its own reason as to why I love it or hate it.

This past weekend I decided to pick up Revlon’s Colorstay Liquid Lipstick in Perfect Peony. I put it on as soon as I bought it at around 9:45pm. I noticed that as soon as I put it on it felt kind of tacky until I let it dry for a few minutes. It then became super dry, and I couldn’t even rub my lips together! For this reason I would take away 1 out of 5 hearts right off the bat!

After that, I drank a Passion Tea Iced Tea from Starbucks I noticed that a few “flakes” of color came off on the straw but it wasn’t as bad a regular lip gloss/lipstick. I then I ate some ice cream and the color didn’t budge, which I was very happy about! Then the ultimate test! I asked my fiancé to kiss me and guess what? The color didn’t move, budge, make him girly, or anything! I actually fell asleep with the lip color on and I woke up with some of it still on my lips! I guess there are positives and negatives for everything out there.

For this product I give it 3 ½ hearts out of 5. The things I loved about Revlon’s Colorstay Liquid Lipstick was the actual pink/ nude shade of the lipcolor, the lasting power, and that it didn’t transfer. Things I didn’t really like were the drying effect it had on my lips, but some Chapstick fixed that, and the flakeyness of it. So stay tuned for my next review!

I had the chance to chat with Jovan, creator and owner of JovanJane.com, to speak a little bit about herself and what she does.

Q: What made you want to start designing your products?

I was always into fashion and would create and design pieces for myself. When I was on a trip to LA wearing one of my pieces, I kept getting stopped on the street asking where I got them from! After so many requests, I decided to start my own line of fun accessories!

Q: What inspires your designs most?

Anything and everything from the streets, movies, dreams, magazines…

Q: Who is your favorite designer?

I honestly cannot pick just one! I love accessories from Henri Bendel! I will tell you that my favorite style icon is Victoria Beckham. I always love what she wears!

Q: What are 3 things we should know about Jovan Jane as a brand?

1. The pieces are meant to be worn with something simple. You shouldn’t pair them up with other loud pieces or prints.

2. There are so many ways to wear one piece. Be creative!

3. Everything is designed in Detroit!

Q: When can we be expecting some new products and what will they be?

In March you will find fedoras, lace pieces, braided elastic styles, a few new bridal designs and beach brim hats!

Q: Where can we find Jovan Jane ( other than online)?

Hats, barrettes, headbands, where do I begin!! Well I happen to have the perfect place! I learned about this amazing headpiece designer while searching for my perfect ribbon headband for my upcoming wedding. Jovan Jane is a company owned by the fab Jovan Kassab. Jovan is one of the most creative head wear designers I have come across in a long time. Her pieces range from understated to totally glam (which is totally my style!) Her pieces are also affordable which is why I wanted to share her work with all of you!

Jovan is truly amazing and super creative. Jovan Jane headbands come in all styles, colors, and variety of materials such as elastics, ribbon, bands, lace, and chains. She uses great quality materials such as Swarovski crystals to adorn her headbands, bracelets and hats. Speaking of hats! Jovan Jane has some of the most stunning hats which come in beret, wide brim, ear warmers and brand new fedora! They will all make heads turn whether you’re at the beach, horse track, ski lodge, or just hanging out at the mall.

And if you love dressing your pet in fashionable finds you will fall head over heels (or paws) for Jovan Jane’s pet collars. The collars feature handmade flowers, many different rock band appliqués, sequin skulls, butterflies, bows, and much more. Most if not all of Jovan Jane’s pet collars are available in a plethora of colors. If you are planning on having your pet in your wedding, taking special family photos that include your best friend or just for a walk in the park, they will surely appreciate the effort you made to make them look amazing!

The thing I actually love most about Jovan Jane is Jovan herself! Jovan loves to connect with customers and make you feel like you have been friends for years. She is kind and great about answering any questions you may have about her products. Jovan is also a supporter of many charities such as The American Cancer Society, Much Love Animal Rescue, Barbra Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, and University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Jovan was so kind as to answer some questions that I had for her.

Bullying

So, we all thought bullying would end after Middle School or High School…. well guess again! Bullying still happens at places like colleges or even work. During a recent issue at the school I attend in South Florida it has made me really passionate about discussing this subject.

No matter your age, race, religion, sexual orientation, or how you dress there is always going to be something for someone else to judge you about. I am actually totally fine with that. Not everyone is always going to agree on things about fashion, sex, politics, or religion and that’s cool. But, there are more appropriate and mature ways to go about talking about them and not turning things into something that could possibly harm another person or their self-esteem.

Growing up, we all know that our parents told us “If you have nothing nice to say then don’t say anything at all” – now, I totally understand why they taught us this lesson! Starting up my second semester of school brought on all new challenges other than the usual schoolwork and cramming for tests. New students entered our nurtured learning environment and literally made it hell! There were a few instances when I thought that maybe it was just me that felt this way, but it turns out that it was everyone in our class feeling the same negative and bullying behavior that I was encountering.

Going to school or work is something that most people do on a daily basis and while its not something everyone likes to do it shouldn’t be a place that we actually dread going to because of other people and their actions. Being talked about, threatened and even having your learning environment disturbed is absolutely unacceptable.

Having to deal with girls pushing your chair forcefully or yelling out inappropriate words or statements is quite difficult to deal with while trying to learn and get an education, or even while trying to do work if this is happening at your place of employment.

While going to your boss, teacher, head of the department or even the dean of your school may help a situation, that isn’t always the case although it should be dealt with by them. I know some school systems have an anti-bullying procedure that their staff follows such as the Broward Country Public Schools system. This is what the Browardschools.com website has to say about its anti-bullying policy:

The District’s Anti-Bullying Policy specifically prohibits bullying of or by any District student or employee, with consequences for those acts that meet the definition of bullying as defined in the policy:

“Bullying” means systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or employees.
The policy sets forth guidelines for the identification and reporting of bullying – as the overall goal of the initiative is the protection of students and their increased feelings of safety and belonging. The policy requires teachers and staff to utilize a variety of prevention and intervention activities and includes tools and resources that create environments of safety and respect and expectations of appropriate behavior. The Anti-Bullying Policy was developed by a District task force, which included community and parental involvement.

Flow chart of the investigation procedure for Anti-Bullying

Download Here

I applaud Broward Country for making this policy and setting up their teacher and parent training guides on its site. However, I do not know if this policy spreads down to the adult education schools such as the one I attend. According to their website Broward County Public Schools states that bullying is anything that constitutes to harassment by anyone and to anyone. From this excerpt from the counties website, it specifically defines what bullying means and the procedure that should be taken when it happens. I feel that every school system and workplace should have something like this in place for all employees and students to take advantage of, while being able to stay anonymous. I feel that our teacher has been doing her best to follow these procedures, but like I said I do not know if this policy spreads down to the adult education sector.

Take a look!

The Policy defines bullying as “systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or employees.” It is further defined as “unwanted purposeful written, verbal, nonverbal, or physical behavior, including but not limited to any threatening, insulting or dehumanizing gestures, by an adult or student, that has the potential to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment or cause long term damage, cause discomfort or humiliation; or reasonably interfere with the individual’s school performance or participation is carried out repeatedly and is often characterized by an imbalance of power.”

That is a lot of info to grasp all at once, but to keep it simple, we can help determine if a behavior is bullying by using this acronym:

R – Repeated

I – Imbalance of Power

P - Purposeful

What are the procedures

Employees are required to report incidents. Employees, students, parents, and visitors,

However, are strongly encouraged to report suspected incidents to their principal and/or appropriate area/district administrator either verbally or in writing.

As an adult, I don’t believe a teacher or whom ever the student reports to really understands the situation or even takes it as serious as they would if it were happening to a child or adolescent. I intend to take action and speak to my schools administrative staff to see if our guidelines meet the Anti- Bullying Policy. If you are in high school or middle school, always know that there are steps you can take if you feel that you are being bullied. Most school systems or even in your individual school are prepared to handle these situation and most education professionals have been thoroughly trained with the Anti-Bullying Policy in your area.

Don’t be afraid to speak up!

Have you ever had a time in your life where something came up and you had no time to get clothes on, let alone wash your hair? Well, say hello to Tresemmé’s new life hair saver! Now i’ll admit, when I saw the commercial for this product, I laughed and said who’s going to need that? Well, did I get kicked in the face with that statement when I found out at the last minute that family friends were going out to dinner and I was invited! I had an hour to get ready and as you girls know, you can’t even do your hair in an hour, let alone get ready! So what was my first thought? Crap, I need to wash my hair! So I thought of a few things I could do:

Option 1: Wear a hat. Well, that wouldn’t work because I was wearing a fancy dress and hats and dresses don’t go together unless you’re going to the Kentucky Derby or the beach.

Option two: Grab the baby powder – well that wouldn’t be all that helpful seeing as it gives that chalky look and doesn’t do much in refreshing your do – so scratch that!

Option three: Dry Shampoo? Well, I remembered seeing this Fresh Start Dry Shampoo on a commercial a few days earlier, so I figured what the heck! It couldn’t be worse than doing nothing at all to my hair. So I ran to Target and picked up a can for about $5.

Got home. Got ready. Now the last step was to fix my do. So I crossed my fingers, followed the instructions on the can and sprayed (remember: 8-12 inches away from my head). Waited 1-2 minutes, per the request of the instructions, and proceeded to brush the product through my hair. My jaw dropped open in astonishment! The Dry Shampoo really worked! No more oil! My hair even smelt freshly washed! I would have never thought a product out of a can could get my hair clean and fresh so quickly and easily! It really does give you a Fresh Start!

To take it to the max test, I didn’t wash my hair for a few days – just to see how tough this stuff really was – and still had clean smelling hair with no oil to be found! I even got complements on how great my hair looked. It’s unbelievable!

Fresh Start Dry Shampoo eliminates odor, adding a citrus scent to your locks, removes oil (it literally vanishes before your eyes!), Volumizes oily/straight hair, and reduces the need to wash as frequently. It does everything it says it does! You can even buy the Fresh Start Refreshing Mist to add a bit of shine to your hair.

Would I recommend this? Heck ya!

I rate this product 5 out of 5 hearts – I love it! It truly does wonders, especially when you’re in a rush and need a quick refresh. I’m really happy with it and recommend it to anyone who is on the go a lot, has a last minute shindig or just wants that clean feeling to last longer in between washes!

Tips:

** Make sure you spray 8-12 inches away from your hair! If you spray too closely you will get too much product in one area and it will give you a big blotch of visible white chalk on your hair! Don’t worry though, as long as you spray evenly and not to close you’ll be fine . And make sure to brush through you hair; that removes the excess product.

I don’t know about you but, I love McDonald’s coffee. It’s a craving rich medium roast of coffee goodness in the morning. It just has this fresh, crisp, unique taste that others, such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, don’t. Maybe it’s just me. But, if you are a fan of McDonald’s coffee as much as me, than this should be useful information to get the best tasting mix of cream and sugar in that delectable Cup ‘o’ Joe.

So how does one mix the perfect cup of brew from McD’s?

Well after many attempts to find the perfect combination of cream to sugar ratio, I finally discovered what the best tasting combo is!

I actually found two combos to be exact.

On those days when you want a strong but slightly sweet mix to wake you up in the morning try a combo of : 1 Cream and 4 Sugars to a Small cup and 2 Creams and 5 Sugars to a Medium. This combo still gives you that rich McDonald’s Coffee taste but isn’t so strong that it knocks your socks off. I don’t think a black regular coffee can kick your socks off from McDonald’s but, if you want that effect there is always the McCafé espresso (which I haven’t tried yet but its much “bolder, with a rich, roasted flavor…” or so I read).

On those days when you want something a little less strong but still has that coffee taste (I hate when coffee is creamed so much that it turns into a cup of sweetened milk rather than coffee) try a combo of: 2 Creams and 5 Sugars to a small or 3 Creams and 6 Sugars to a large.

Both these combos still have that great taste we love about coffee in it, for whatever mood you’re in.

I don’t want to sound like an expert on coffee mixing, because everyone mixes their coffee differently. But I just wanted to share my way – maybe you like it maybe you don’t .

Leave a comment about how you take your coffee!

Ruffles making you go Gaga this Spring? Well fear not! We’ve got the perfect guide on how to wear those ruffles the right way!

Ruffles can be a beautiful accent to an ensemble, if worn correctly. The best way to wear this trend is to make it subtle and not overindulge.

Click the “continue reading” link below to read more about “How To Wear Ruffles!”

This is part 2 of the Spring Trends 2010 series. If you haven’t read part one already make sure to do so by clicking here!

How to wear ruffles

Wearing Ruffles

Remember less is more. And when it comes to ruffles, this rule is key! You want to look sexy chic not carnival mystique. Therefore, make sure you don’t wear too much of a good thing. The best way to go with ruffles, is to make sure you stick to wearing one piece that contains ruffles. Anything more will be too over-the-top. Almost like an ice cream sundae, all those toppings are so tempting that you decide to put all of them on your one little sundae. And what happens? Well it doesn’t taste as good as if you were to only add a hint of those toppings. Back to ruffles… For example try wearing a ruffle blouse with a fitted blazer and fitted jeans. Or if you’d like, you can wear a ruffle dress, but keep in mind your body type (discussed below). If you go for the ruffle dress, you also want to incorporate some kind of bareness with the ensemble, such as choosing a style of dress that is strapless or has thin straps, such as a spaghetti-strap style. This will show of your figure and minimize the bulk of the dress.

Layering

No, not layers of ruffles! But, layers over ruffles! A great way to wear this feminine detail trend is to let those ruffles peak through under garments like a sweater or boyfriend blazer! By pairing your ruffle blouse with a sexy boyfriend blazer, you can sport both spring trends in one outfit! You’ll be surprised how a small detail can make a masculine blazer look feminine chic. After all that is the point of the feminine detail trend – to add a little bit of girly to that otherwise not so girly outfit.

Ruffles in the right place

The important thing to remember when wearing ruffles is to understand that ruffles add volume. Therefore, it’s important that you take that into consideration before choosing to wear any type of ruffle garment. If you would like to add a little bit of volume to your bust area, than wearing a blouse that incorporates ruffles at the top of a shirt will be perfect for you. Remember that for a smaller bust you shouldn’t wear ruffles that go down the middle of your shirt as this will make your bust area appear even smaller. If you are fuller in the bust area than you will need to choose a different area for your ruffles to be, such as ruffles on the bottom, cuffs, or on the shoulder of a blouse. Keep in mind that even if you have a fuller bust, you don’t have to give up on ruffles on the top area just yet! You can still wear a blouse with ruffles on your bust area, just as long as the ruffles are vertical flowing. Adding ruffles to your shoulder area will make them look broader and is the perfect solution to balance out larger hips. If you have narrow hips and long slim legs, you can wear ruffles on your hips to add a little fullness to your hips. If your hips aren’t very slim, you can try wearing a skirt that has longer falling ruffles.

Accessories

When wearing ruffles there isn’t a need to add any type of flashy accessories since the ruffles act as almost a kind of accessory themselves. Necklaces will interfere with the effect of the ruffles so if you’d like to wear any type of jewelry try a cute cuff, bangle or a nice pair of earrings. Those items will not compete with the ruffles and will complement them instead.

Pairing

When wearing ruffles keep in mind that the ruffles are the main piece of your ensemble. Think: Ruffles = Focal Point. So, you’ll want the rest of your outfit to stay simple. I think that the cutest combination is pairing a ruffle blouse tucked into a sexy fitted pencil skirt with high heel pumps (So Cute!)! Another sleek combination is a ruffle top with a pair of skinny jeans and platform shoes (another trend this spring)! How ever you decide to wear your ruffles, always remember the rules of KISS – Keep it simple sexy !

Do all these names leave your head spinning? Oleg Cassini, Maggie Sottero, Private Label by G, Pnina Tornea, Melissa Sweet, Jim Hjelm, Reem Acra trumpet, drop waist a-line, ballgown, silk, satin, lace, organza, chiffon, taffeta, and tulle. I know they made mine! Whether you are shopping at David’s Bridal or a high end boutique, there are a few things you should know before you step through the door. Doing research before you decide to make that appointment is very important and should be done first. Bridal magazines and websites like weddingbee.com or theknot.com are great to start the search. While you are searching through the never-ending possibilities, keep in mind your body shape, since I don’t think you would want to look like this…

So, keep in mind your body shape as it will make your shopping experience more enjoyable and cause less damage to your self-esteem.

Click the “continue reading” link to read more about body shapes!

The Hour Glass Figure

One of the most desirable body shapes, the “hour glass” figure, is defined by a narrow waist and somewhat equal bust and hips. Hour glass figures can be seen on stars like Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian, and Anne Hataway. Girls with more of a slim hour glass figure can pretty much wear any style dress. For fuller-figured hour glass figures, structured waists and firmer materials are more suitable, but they can also choose a variety of different tops and skirt styles. If you are a girl like myself trying to camouflage a few areas (like your tummy), dresses with ruching are one way to go. Dresses, like the Melissa Brooch by Maggie Sottero (Click Here to View) (which happened to be the one I chose), are most suitable for the hour glass figure. This is because they are form-fitting and allow your natural curves to be seen, while delicately disguising any problem areas below the waist. You’ll notice that on the Melissa Brooch dress, the ruching flows in different directions which draws the eye away from problem areas. This dress also has some added help with a corset back. It has a Sweetheart neckline that is very appealing for women with larger chests. Its drop waist style, which incorporates a longer bodice section and a shorter skirt section, also helps to elongate the torso.

What to Avoid

Fuller hour glass figures should try to avoid full or ruffled gowns, as they may accentuate problem areas and make the frame appear larger on top as well as the bottom. Also, stay away from dresses with a lot of beadwork or ornamentation.

The Rectangle Figure

The less curvy figure that is relatively evenly proportioned is known as the straight body shape or “the rectangle figure.” Girls with this shape, including Cameron Diaz, Kiera Knightly, and Misha Barton, should gravitate more towards dresses that have a visible definition at the waist such as a belt, bow, or sash. Fuller sleeves can also help to give more definition and add the appearance of curves. In order to create the illusion of a shapelier figure, rectangular frames need to look for a dress that draws attention to their bust or waist area. A beaded neckline or bodice is ideal. The best dress for drawing attention to the bust area for the rectangle figure is the empire style dress. This dress has a raised waistline that can sometimes be seen below the bust. If you’d like to draw attention to your waist instead try a ball-gown, which is known for having a fitted bodice and full-flowing bottom, allowing the eyes to be drawn to the fuller section of the dress. Drawing attention to either of these areas will give the impression of a more curvacious figure.

What to Avoid

You should steer clear from drop waist and sheath dresses, which provide a figure-hugging fit and do not create the illusion of a more shapelier figure.

The Apple Figure

Women with more weight around the stomach area and a less-defined waistline are defined as “the Apple figure.” These women tend to have larger breasts, as well as narrow hips and shoulders. Stars that sport an apple figure include Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet, and Jade Jagger. The key here is to find dresses that are more slimming for your frame. In order to hide a thicker waist you’ll need to raise, lower or eliminate your dress’s waistline. An empire or drop waist gown with an A-line skirt and a plunging/v-neck top will work best with your body type as it will help to obscure your waist and hips. A-line skirts lengthen the body and give the appearance of a slimmer figure. Another option that will give the illusion of a slimmer figure is to show your arms and neck. A deep v-neck, sweetheart or scoop neckline is the best way for the apple figure to show skin on the arms and neck areas. Doing so will draw the eyes upwards rather than towards the midsection. If you would like a fuller dress, try a ball-gown that has a tightly-fitted corseted bodice.

What to Avoid

Stay away from pleated and tiered dresses as well as dresses that draw attention to your waistline.

The Pear Figure

A “pear-shaped figure” takes the shape of a triangle. The hips are relatively larger compared to the bust area. For women who have a pear shape (which in my research is the most common body shape today), an A-line, princess line, structured bodice, or full skirts such as a ball-gown are the way to go. Embellishments and ruching on the bust line area will look amazing on your body type as they will draw the eye away from fuller hips. Keep your shoulder line strong and refrain from wearing items with “a sloppy shoulder line” or boat neckline. It’s important that your dress fits your shoulders because the eye is drawn to this definition.

What to Avoid

The pear shape figure will want to avoid thin straps and boat necklines – a wide, high neckline that follows the curve of the collarbone and ends in points on the shoulder seams. You should also avoid pleated or gathered materials that form at the waist line, as these will draw more attention to your hips.
